Dubai ICU program cuts genetic diagnosis time to 3.4 days for critically ill children
A citywide rapid whole-genome sequencing program in Dubai diagnosed 53 percent of 100 critically ill children in intensive care, according to a Nature Medicine study. The Little Falcon program, operating across neonatal and pediatric ICUs in the Dubai healthcare system, sequenced trios of patients and parents from 18 Middle Eastern and Asian countries. Turnaround time hit a median of 3.4 days. That compared to 38 days for standard genetic testing in a matched historical cohort. Diagnostic yield also rose from 30 percent with standard methods to 53 percent with rapid sequencing, climbing to 80 percent in consanguineous families. Doctors changed clinical management for 53 percent of patients, including 45 who received molecular diagnoses and 8 who did not. Disease trajectories shifted in 16 percent of cases. Twelve percent of patients had multiple molecular findings, including 5 percent with dual diagnoses, 4 percent with newborn screening-relevant variants, and 3 percent with secondary or incidental findings flagged by American College of Medical Genetics guidelines.
Rapid genome sequencing in intensive care units can cut diagnostic delays by more than a month and double the rate of actionable findings compared to standard testing, potentially changing treatment decisions for more than half of critically ill children.
