Eight Bat Genomes Show Genetic Links Between Long Life and Viral Defense

A team generated near-complete genome assemblies and cell lines for eight Myotis bat species and found genetic adaptations that connect longevity with viral tolerance. The Nature study identified genome-wide positive selection for proteins that interact with DNA viruses and elevated copy-number variation for proteins that interact with RNA viruses. Primary cells from Myotis lucifugus, a long-lived species, responded to DNA damage in ways not seen in other mammals. The researchers also found positive selection in cancer pathways associated with longevity and identified multiple ancient duplications of the immune factor EIF2AK2 (PKR) that segregate across species.

The work shows that extreme longevity in bats and their tolerance to viruses may stem from the same genetic pathways, offering insight into how these traits evolved together.
