FDA Approves First Gene-Targeted Drug for Advanced Pancreatic Cancer
The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved daraxonrasib, sold as Rasonque by Revolution Medicines, for advanced pancreatic cancer. The drug is the first to attack a genetic cause of the disease. A clinical trial showed patients who received Rasonque as second-line treatment had median overall survival of 13.2 months, compared to 6.7 months for those on standard chemotherapy. Andrew Ko, a medical oncologist at the University of California, San Francisco, called it the biggest development in pancreatic cancer in decades. He said it will be transformative in how doctors treat the disease.
Patients receiving the genetic-targeted therapy lived nearly twice as long as those on standard chemotherapy in second-line treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer, a highly lethal malignancy.
