Pituitary Society Sets Standards for Genetic Testing in Pituitary Tumors
The Pituitary Society published an international consensus statement in Nature Reviews Endocrinology on genetic testing for pituitary adenomas. The statement recommends germline testing for loss-of-function variants in nine genes: AIP, MEN1, CDKN1B, PRKAR1A, SDHA, SDHB, SDHC, SDHD, and MAX. It also covers GPR101-containing microduplications and postzygotic GNAS variants. The consensus group laid out recommendations on test indications, pre-test counseling, methodologies, and how to interpret results. Testing should be done within multidisciplinary teams that include endocrine, genetic, and laboratory expertise, the group concluded.
The guidelines give clinicians a standard approach to genetic testing for pituitary tumors and help identify hereditary cancer syndromes that could affect treatment decisions.
