Studies in Nature map prefrontal cortex cells from nearly 1,500 people

Researchers have mapped gene expression across millions of individual brain cells from prefrontal cortex tissue donated by nearly 1,500 people, using single-nucleus RNA sequencing. The PsychAD Consortium built the atlas, described in three papers in Nature. It covers changes across the lifespan and in both health and disease. The authors say the resource offers molecular detail on a brain region that shapes personality and behaviours.

The atlas gives researchers and clinicians a reference for how brain cells change with ageing, useful when studying disease.
