A case-control study of 411 Korean participants found that carriers of the rs1042713 G/G genotype and G allele in the ADRB2 gene showed significantly higher odds of being elite athletes. The study, published in 2024, compared 150 elite athletes, 116 college athletes, and 145 controls using PCR-RFLP genotyping. The G/G genotype had an odds ratio of 2.42 (95% CI 1.384-4.235, p = 0.002) and the G allele had an odds ratio of 1.58 (95% CI 1.184-2.098, p = 0.002) for elite athletic performance. The association was stronger in female elite athletes (p = 0.0002 for both genotype and allele). The ADRB2 gene encodes the β2-adrenergic receptor, which interacts with adrenaline and influences cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, and musculoskeletal functions.

The findings could inform athlete talent identification programs in Korea, though the authors note that validation in larger samples with diverse sports types and ethnic backgrounds is needed.
