Rage at eating sounds shares genetic links with anxiety and PTSD

A genome-wide association study of 23andMe participants examined the genetics of rage triggered by eating sounds, a common misophonia symptom. The analysis, published in 2022 by researchers at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience and Amsterdam UMC, found significant genetic correlations with tinnitus, major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. The symptom showed the strongest genetic overlap with psychiatric conditions and personality traits linked to anxiety.
The findings suggest misophonia may share biological pathways with anxiety disorders, informing future research directions.
